SHILLONG: The issue of the closure of the Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) gate at Happy Valley which served as an entry for Mawshbuit villagers was raised in the KHADC’s Summer Session on Tuesday.
HSPDP’s Sohryngkham MDC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem slammed the State Government for its alleged indifferent attitude towards the problem and demanded the immediate removal of the gate that leads to Mawshbuit. “The State Government has to take responsibility for the well-being of the locals,” he said adding that the village came into existence much before the army personnel settled near it.
“The village came into being in 1867 while the army arrived during 1960-70. The lack of foresight on the people in the past had led them to allow the construction of the gate without any valid document. The Executive Committee should earnestly look in to the matter,” he added.
Replying to the query, Hadrian Lyngdoh, EM in charge of market said, “The village has been reduced to a jail-like area as there is only one gate leading to the village and no other route is available and this has posed a difficulty to the public when it came to moving in and out of the area.” “The Executive Committee will take up the matter with the DC, SP, State Home department and the Home Ministry apart from army officials to find a permanent solution to the problem,” he added.
