UDP MDC rejects ‘Dkhar’ prefix for clan name

SHILLONG: UDP MDC Roma Khymdeit said that the local population in Ri-Bhoi district will not accept the ‘Tang Jait’ or the ceremony for adopting a Jait (clan) with the prefix of ‘Dkhar’ or simply ‘Khar’ to any clan name in case of any person born of a Khasi father and a non Khasi mother and has called for amendment of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 1997.
Speaking during the general discussion on the budget, she said, “We will not accept the ceremony of Tang Jait. In Ri-Bhoi there are no surnames with prefix ‘Khar’. In this connection, KHADC CEM P.N. Syiem said that with regard to amendment of the Act, a general discussion will have to take place to reach a consensus.
