Illegal transportation of coal still continues in State
JOWAI: Illegal transportation of coal from Jaintia Hills to Assam continues despite the NGT ban.
Sources informed that around 30 to 40 trucks ply every night from Jaintia Hills to the neighbouring state through various route avoiding the national highways to escape detection by police.
Trucks coming from Lad Rymbai area take the NH-44 till Phramer and drive through Pasyih Kyndongtuber Road to Nangbah and then to the Nartiang- Nongpoh from where they proceed to Mawlasnai.
West Jaintia Hills Police detected four such trucks – AS01 DD 4135 driven by Sbun Siangshai, AS01 DD 0098 driven by Kermiki Shylla, AS01 BC 3478 driven by Naresh Chettri and AS01 EC 0717 driven by Lot Raliang – loaded with coal in the wee hours of Friday.
The trucks were seized and a case under appropriate section of law was registered against the truck owners while the drivers were placed under arrest.

Doctors, nurses unavailable at Allagre CHC
TURA: The Boghai Region Management Committee (BRMC) on behalf of all residents under Allagre Community Health Centre (CHC) recently met Health Minister A.L. Hek to complain against the alleged non performance of doctors and nurses at the CHC.
In their complaint the leaders of the committee informed that residents of villages all along the Boghai river were badly affected due to non-availability of doctors and nurses at the CHC.
“Serious patients who come to the CHC like pregnant mothers including those needing birth certificates for school admissions are facing hardships as doctors and nurses are unavailable even for administering first aids during accidents,” they claimed.
The committee urged the minister to look into the matter to ease the grievances of the people. A copy of their complaint was also given to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, local MLA of Chokpot, Bluebell R. Sangma and the District Medical and Health Officer in Tura.

Silver jubilee of St. Anthony’s College Computer Science dept
SHILLONG: The department of Computer Science, St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, recently organised the inaugural function of its silver jubilee celebration. The department was established on June 13, 1991.
The programme was attended by past and present faculty members of the department, faculty members and students of the college.
The programme was graced by Dr. Shailendra Chaudhari, Director (S&T) and I/c Director (Admin.), NEC, Fr. Joseph Nellanatt, Pro Vice Chancellor, Assam Don Bosco University and the invited speaker, Timothy Dkhar, State Informatics Officer (SIO), NIC Meghalaya State Centre.
The department also organised ‘RUN++’ a run for AIDS awareness on June 18, sponsored by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society.

MLCU students perform ‘circle of rhythms’
Shillong: Rhythms and beats of melodious sound reverberated through the air when students and faculty of the Department of Fine Arts, Martin Luther Christian University took to the stage on Friday evening for a musical performance titled ‘Ha Jylli ki Khriang’ or ‘The Circle of Rhythms’ at U Soso Tham Auditorium Hall here.
The main objective of this performance was to provide a platform for the students of MLCU to showcase their skills.
The event was sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

BJYM condemns kidnapping of priest’s father in Garo Hills
SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has condemned the kidnapping of the father of a Catholic priest in Garo Hills.
“We condemn the kidnapping of the father of a religious figure by criminals who take opportunity to bring insecurity in the minds of the people,” said BJYM president Egenstar Kurkalang.
“The State government should immediately act upon the crime committed and arrest the criminals at the earliest,” he said.
Stating that the need of the hour is peace and security for the people, he observed that the State government should take necessary steps to give security to the people.
Meanwhile, the BJYM and the Ri-Bhoi District Youth Wing on Thursday gifted young brave heart Angelica Tynsong a token of appreciation.
Angelica was recently presented with the national bravery award by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her selfless act of saving her then seven month old brother from a devastating fire that had razed their home last year.Tynsong left for Jaipur on Friday to pursue her further studies there.

Rooftop rain water harvesting project inaugurated
SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh on Thursday unveiled the tablet to mark the inauguration of the rooftop rain water harvesting project at Sngap Syiem College Girls’ Hostel, Mawlangwir, Mawkyrwat.
South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner R. Lyngdoh was also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering Lyngdoh informed that the project was implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 7 lakh.
He hoped that the structure will cater to the needs of the hostellers especially during the dry seasons.

Convene meeting of Pnar alphabet panel: JSU to JHADC
SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union has requested the JHADC to convene the first meeting of the Pnar Alphabet Committee (PAC).
In a statement issued here on Friday, the JSU said it had met members of the JHADC and the member secretary of PAC. The PAC has been set up by the Council to introduced Pnar alphabets.
The organization requested JHADC CEM Thombor Shiwat and C. Tyngkan, member secretary of PAC, to convene a meeting at the earliest.
The committee members included four JHADC EMs and two officers of the JHADC, besides noted figures from Jaintia Hills – Chaphrang C. Passah, Rikoma Q. Laloo, Phillo Passah, Hebormi Sungoh, Casien Suchiang and Rikut N. Parien.

Drug peddler held in Jowai
JOWAI: Acting on a tip-off, Jowai police on Friday arrested one Romeo Synrem alias Meme of Khimusniang, Jowai, on charges of peddling drugs and using them. The arrested person is a cabbie.
Police arrested him while he was waiting for customers at Nan-Kashari Park near DC’s Office. Police also seized the taxi (ML04 A 0931) belonging to one Donboklang Wann of Shangpung.
According to West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, R. Muthu, the arrested person had earlier been booked under the Narcotics Act.
Police also seized 4 grams of heroin and 12 empty lead vials from his possession.
Considering that the accused is habitual drug peddler and had been booked earlier, a case under proper sections of the IPC has been registered against him.
