SHILLONG: With the vendors appointed to undertake the enrolment exercise for the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) by issuing a unique biometric-enabled number called ‘Aadhaar’ failing to complete the exercise quickly, the State government has now decided to appoint new vendors to ensure that the exercise is completed at the earliest.
A State government official informed on Sunday that the old vendors would continue to work but the government would appoint new vendors to expedite the enrolment process.
According to sources, the matter has been taken up with the Registrar General and the Census Commissioner of India and the proposal has been approved.
The State government admitted that the performance of the existing vendors has not   been up to the mark even though people have been coming forward for enrolment.
“However, appointment of a new vendor would take some time as the government would appoint a new vendor through a selection process,” sources said.
It may be mentioned that enrolment for Aadhaar has been halted in the State since last month due to ‘unresolved’ issues with the vendors.
It is learnt that around 20 per cent of the population in East Khasi Hills has been enrolled for the Aadhaar card.
