SHILLONG: KHNAM has appealed to all regional parties to unite to form a consolidated front to take on the national parties in the 2018  Assembly elections.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Wednesday, the party president Adelbert Nongrum opined that it was high time for the regional parties in the state to come together forgetting all their differences to defeat the national parties namely Congress and BJP in 2018 polls.
Stating that his party does not believe in living under the shadow of the national parties, he said, “Let us strengthen ourselves (regional parties)   to fulfill the aspirations of our people”.
According to Nongrum, if KHNAM, HSPDP and UDP join hands they can easily defeat any national party to form the next government in the State in 2018.
“Despite ruling the state for several years, Congress has done nothing as far as development of the state is concerned,” he added.
Door is open: NPP
Meanwhile, NPP has said that it is ready to accommodate any leader who wishes to join the party.
Indicating this, the party’s state president  WR Kharlukhi, however, said that the party has some reservations as far as Congressmen are concerned.
“If any Congress leader sends feeler, we will discuss the issue first before giving green signal,” he said adding that so far no one from Congress has sent any feeler to join NPP.
) He also slammed Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for his statement that he would bury NPP in 2018 elections.
Reacting to a query, he said that his party has a very strong support base in Garo Hills and NPP’s landslide victory in the last Tura by-poll is an indication of that.
