TURA: The appointment of two non-tribal MDCs to top posts in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council has drawn flak with the A’chik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO) strongly opposing the move.
The opposition by the AYWO is against the recent appointments of S G Esmatur Mominin as the Chairman of the Planning Board and Sofior Rahman as the Chairman of the Bakijai Advisory Committee of the GHADC.
Reminding that it, along with other NGOs have been strongly protesting the candidature of non-tribals in the elections of the GHADC, the AYWO termed the two appointments as ‘ridiculous and insulting’ and condemned the NPP led executive committee for the move.
The AYWO sought the immediate revocation of the appointments and that capable tribal MDCs are appointed in their places.
“We do not oppose non-tribals contesting the Assembly Elections and getting elected as MLAs. But the GHADC is meant only for Garos and we will continue to oppose non-tribal participation as it is against the very concept of its formation as laid down by the 6th Schedule of the Constitution,” it said.
