SHILLONG: Independent MDC in the GHADC, Sofiur Rahman, has allegedly made threatening speeches against Rajabala MLA Ashahel D. Shira who was instrumental in causing an inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for MGNREGS.
In this context, one Md. Soyful Sheik lodged a complaint that on June 27 at around 9 PM, MDC Sofiur Rahman, Md. Bodiyot Zaman, VEC secretary of Morasoti village and Md. Kairul Islam VEC secretary of Sidakandi village in West Garo Hills along with others gathered in the house of one Md. Sohidur Rahman at Khadergaon in Phulbari.
In the gathering, the MDC allegedly stated that the action of Ashahel D. Shira in causing enquiry into VEC scam under MGNREGS scheme in the villages under Rajabala constituency will result into ‘a fate of getting easily eliminated’ as the MLA frequently travels to Guwahati alone.
As per the complaint, later on June 29 at around 9.30 AM, the complainant Md. Soyful Sheik and his wife were allegedly assaulted by Md. Sohidur Rahman and were threatened with dire consequences in their residence at Khadergaon.
When contacted, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said if there is any truth in the allegation, the police will conduct an inquiry into the matter.
He also said the district has received huge funds under the MGNREGS and the funds have been transferred to around 1100 VECs through the blocks.
“There is no problem in other VECs except 8-10 VECs where there are allegations of various types such as nonpayment and half payment of funds under the scheme,” he said.
Bakshi also informed that an inquiry has been ordered into the alleged scam under MGNREGS scheme in the villages under Rajabala constituency and the Dadenggre SDO (Civil) has been given two weeks’ time to submit the report on the scam.
