SHILLONG: It has taken years for construction of the abattoir at Mawiong to be completed.
Now it seems like people of the State have to prolong their wait to avail the benefit of hygienic meat from the abattoir.
The reason, incidentally, seems a bit bizarre. The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department is yet to figure out modalities on running the slaughter house.
Informing this here on Wednesday, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Deborah Marak said, “We are finalizing how to successfully run the abattoir in coordination with the butchers and then we will inaugurate it.”
It would be worthwhile to remember that on January 7 last, Marak had inspected the just completed abattoir and had announced publicly that the abattoir would be inaugurated in February, subject to completion of training for the butchers.
It was learnt that trainings have been imparted to the butchers on how to use the state of the art machineries at the abattoir.
The abattoir has been constructed at a cost of Rs 22 crore by the Rapsang Group of Companies, Shillong, in collaboration with Real Growth Company, Chennai.
The government, in the meanwhile, has planned similar abattoirs in Tura and Jowai.
