Two siblings killed in Guwahati landslide

Guwahati: Two teen-aged siblings were killed in sleep when a landslide triggered by incessant early morning heavy rain on Thursday fell on their house located at a foothills area at the 11th mile in the outskirt of the along Assam-Meghalaya boundary.
The mother ofthe deceased and their sister were injured in the incident.Police said the injured were rushed to Sonapur Civil Hospital nearby. They could not be rushed to Guwahati medical college hospital  because of flash flood on the way. The deceased were identified as Nanu Sharma and her brother Vishal Sharma.
Meanwhile, flash flood triggered by heavy downpour on Thursday inundated many parts of Guwahati city throwing life out of gear even as marooned residents took shelter in upper floors of buildings in the affected neighbourhood.
Additional Chief Secretary in charge of Guwahati Development and Health, MGVK Bhanu who took a boat ride to the some worse affected areas in the city informed that flood water level rose to about six  feet height at Anil Nagar area in the city. He said it was an unprecedented situation caused by heavy downpour (97 mm) in the city and neighbouring Meghalaya areas to the south of the city.
He said since the mighty Brahmaputra river flowing by the city above the red mark the sluice gate at mouth of Bharalu river that flows through the city could not be opened to let out the stagnant flood water. He said three pumps were being used to fish out water to Brahmaputra River so as to ease the flood situation in the city. The administration deployed rubber boats to rescue marooned people who needed help and to distribute water bottles, biscuits etc., among the city’s flood hit.
In the wake of the urban flood in Guwahati city, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the Chief  Secretary and all senior officers to go the affected areas and ensure rescue and relief operations and provide all necessary assistance to the people.
