TURA: A group of student and social organizations have on Thursday lodged a complaint with the South Garo Hills deputy commissioner citing alleged highhandedness on the part of police against two persons from Rongara region recently.
The GSU, FKJGP, ADE and BCF lodged their complaint to Deputy Commissioner S.N. Marak, based on the statement given by two persons who complained that police chief A. Mishra had summoned them to Rongara police station on the morning of June 30 and allegedly manhandled them.
“We condemn such atrocity and illegal arbitration of law by police. The police needs to be aware that the law and order department is meant for the protection of innocent people,” stated the organizations while adding that they would be approaching higher authorities of the department to take necessary action against illegal arbitration of law.
Meanwhile, the district police chief, A. Mishra, when contacted denied the allegations of highhandedness as alleged by the organizations and said that two persons from Rongara had been summoned to the police station following reports about extortion taking place in the Rongara market.
“We had been receiving regular complaints from the public about an ongoing illegal collection of money from traders which were being dispatched to the ASAK militant group. The two persons summoned to the station were identified as the main persons behind the extortion drive and they were also found to be identifying potential victims for extortion and abduction by the militant group,” informed the police chief.
He also said both the accused had confessed during questioning that they were forced by the ASAK outfit to work for them.
