SHILLONG: In a shocking incident depicting complete apathy and negligence, a woman was allegedly forced to deliver a baby in the toilet of the Williamnagar Civil Hospital after the hospital staff failed to help the expectant mother leaving her vulnerable and at the mercy of fate.
Bringing the July 7 incident to light on Monday, the FKJGP, east zone slammed the alleged dereliction of duty by the nursing staff of Williamnagar Civil Hospital and also shot off a complaint in this regard to the Commissioner and Secretary, Health department.
“The woman identified as Pagaline Marak was admitted to the hospital for delivery but due to negligence of the nurses on duty she was forced to go to the toilet and deliver the baby all alone,” the FKJGP said.
When contacted, officials from the Williamnagar Civil Hospital admitted that the woman delivered the child in the hospital after she went to the toilet inside the labour room. Officials, however, claimed that even though the hospital staff told the woman that hey will help in the delivery, she went inside the toilet and locked the door.
Denying the allegations that staff nurse did not attend the pregnant woman, the officials informed that the mother and the baby are healthy at the moment.
Meanwhile, according to the FKJGP, a similar incident occurred in Samanda PHC in June last year when a woman was forced to deliver a child without the help of either the nurses or the doctors of the PHC.
The FKJGP has demanded immediate action against the erring doctors and nurses.
