Nongpoh: Seeking inspiration from Late Fr. Sylvanus Sngi Lyngdoh and in an attempt to fulfill his dreams, the Parish Council of Mawbri in Ri-Bhoi has decided to convert one of the Parish lands into a ‘sacred grove’ similar to the one at Mawphlang.
The land located at Sohlia village under the Mawbri Parish having an area of 2 acres was found to be the perfect for conversion into a sacred grove.
It was in 2013 that Fr. Sylvanus Sngi Lyngdoh had taken the initiative during his stint at the Mawbri Parish to convert the land into a sacred grove by erecting monoliths and planted over 1000 saplings during his tenure.
The mission to convert the parish land into a sacred grove was launched on Tuesday when the Mawbri Parish Council led by its priest Fr. Leomary Lyndem and asst. priest Fr. Sirus Syiemlieh conducted a plantation drive where more than 500 saplings were planted in the forest with support from the Catholic believers of Parish Mawbri.
Fr. Lyndem informed newsmen that he was very thankful to Late Fr. Sylvanus Sngi Lyngdoh and it was his mission and vision that the parish land has been converted into a sacred grove which will now be taken care of by the parish.
He also informed that conversion of this land into a sacred grove is aim at not only protecting the motherland but also to protect the animals and medicinal plants most of which have become extinct due to rampage destruction of forest nowadays.
