SHILLONG: The village authority of Mawsynram has slammed the Seng Khasi Hima Mawsynram (SKHM) for its attempt to claim ownership and possession of the Mawjymbuin cave in the area.
The village authority claimed that the cave has been the property of the Mawsynram village Dorbar since time immemorial.
The village authority has also urged the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner to put a stop to a proposed pilgrimage of the SKHM to the popular tourist spot, Mawjymbuin cave, on July 15.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, executive member of the Dorbar Shnong, RH Rapthap said, “The cave is a common property and we cannot accept the ownership claims of the SHKM as nobody has ever tried to snatch the possession rights of the Dorbar Shnong.”
He also expressed surprise over the manner in which the SKHM staked its claim to the Mawjymbuin cave by organizing a pilgrimage without the knowledge and consent of the village authorities.
“The act of the SKHM is highly illegal and hence we have submitted a complaint in this regard to the concerned authorities including the DGP and the SP East Khasi Hills.
“There may be law and order problem if the proposed yatra is stopped,” he said.
