TURA: An organization called the A’chik Tourism Society (ATS) in collaboration with Goera Event Management Society (GEMS) organized a plantation drive along the 28 km Jengjal-Samanda stretch of the highway on July 16, 22 and 23 respectively. The programme was funded by Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme, Tura.
It may be mentioned that Greening Garo Hills is an initiative of ATS which was started last year to increase forest cover and preserve forests in Garo Hills. A total of 5000 fruit bearing, medicinal, flowering and shade giving trees were planted on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, general secretary, ATS, Dipu Marak said, “This plantation, under Greening Garo Hills, an initiative by ATS, is only the first phase and both the NGOs will continue to plant and replace dead saplings gradually.”
