SHILLONG: The Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) has sought held from the State BJP to fix an audience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the Indo-Bangla border fencing issue.
CCIB leaders on Tuesday met BJP State president Shibun Lyngdoh and sought his help to fix an appointment with the Prime Minister.
The Union government recently decided to shift the fencing along the Bangladesh border towards the Zero Line to enhance security and mitigate the problems of Indian villages situated between the fence and the border.
Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, CCIB secretary K. Myrchiang said, “The CCIB welcomes the decision of the Central government to construct the fencing from the Zero Line.”
He expressed regret that the border population lacked information on the exact location of the Zero Line, adding that the survey for the border fencing was conducted without consulting the local village heads.
According to Myrchiang, India and Bangladesh had signed the Nehru-Noon Agreement in 1958 but the survey of the border was not done as per the agreement. “The surveyors did not honour the agreement,” he claimed.
He further stated that the land along the border owned by the local Meghalaya residents have turned into wastelands for lack of agricultural activities.
“BSF personnel never allow our people to go to their own land for cultivation,” he added.
