Panaji: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) don’t reflect well in international rankings despite their high calibre because of a perception handicap, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Saturday.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new IIT in Goa, he said the perception parameter accounted for 40 per cent in the international ranking framework of global tech institutions.
“IITs are recognised world over as one of the few best institutes of the world. But yes, there is a feeling of unfinished agenda because though we are the best institutes, we are not ranked as one of the best institutes of the world. Why, because when I studied the whole international ranking framework, there is really forty per cent marks are given for perception.
“Therefore I decided as my first priority, one of the first priority, that we will give IITs its due place in international ranking by tackling and addressing this perception management issue also. We will manage this perception battle and we will give IITs its due in the international arena and international ranking,” he said.
The new IIT here will be set up temporarily on the campus of the Goa Engineering College in Farmagudi, 25 kms from Panaji, following which it will be shifted to its permanent location on Loliem village in Canacona sub-district in South Goa. (IANS)
