SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday held a meeting with officials of the National Highway Authority of India and PWD (Road) to discuss safety on the Jorabat-Umiam four-lane road.
The meeting reviewed safety of pedestrians, including schoolchildren and senior citizens, at important crossings and regulation of embarking and disembarking points. Speaking to media persons, Sangma said directions were given to the departments on the basis of regular review reports.
The chief minister also said the exercise would be further referred to the Regional Transport Authority along with the Traffic Police to have a complete safety auditing of the whole stretch of  the four-lane road.
Stating that some areas are vulnerable to landslides, the chief minister said there is a need to have effective measures for slope stabilization. He added that the Umsning Bypass is in progress but the existing road which is in alignment to the Bypass is in a dilapidated condition and directions have been given for its urgent repair.
