SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Administration is hoping to complete enrolment of names under the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for issuing ‘Aadhaar’ numbers by December this year.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S Dkhar said on Sunday that enrolment of names in rural areas is likely to be complete by September. He said response “is very good and at least 100 people come in a day for enrolling their names”.
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to know the status of Aadhaar implementation in Meghalaya during a video-conference with Chief Secretary K.S Kropha. The Centre has set December 2017 deadline for 100 per cent enrolment in the country.
Aadhaar enrolment was kept on      hold for more than two months owing to problems over payment to operators and government data says only 7 per cent of the population in Meghalaya has been covered under the programme so far.
The Centre has been informed about the problems faced by Assam and Meghalaya governments in implementing Aadhaar.
