NONGPOH/ AMPATI: The offices of the District School Education Officer and the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer in Ri Bhoi District jointly organised a Teachers’ Day programme at the Parish Hall of St Paul’s Higher Secondary School here.
Three teachers — Rupen Chandra Das, Assistant Teacher at Patharkhmah Government Higher Secondary School, Lina Lyngdoh, Assistant Teacher at St Joseph Upper Primary School Umden and Biaris Mallai, Assistant Teacher at Diwon Government Lower Primary School in Umden. — were awarded at the function for their “tireless efforts for the uplift of the schools”.
Binod Chetri of SOS Umiam and Suklang Nengnong of Umroi Presbyterian received the Best Scoutmaster and the Guide Captain of the District awards, respectively.
Celestine Lyngdoh, who was the chief guest at the programme, said teachers should keep pace with the changing time to provide quality education.
Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare lauded the teachers, whom he called the unsung heroes, for their service. “The talent of a student may not be purely academic but a teacher should be able to nurture them so that they succeed in life,” he said.
Students from various schools performed dance and skits on Monday.
Meanwhile in South West Garo Hills, the Teachers’ Day celebration in Ampati, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills, was marked by a cultural programme and felicitation by the District School Education Office on Monday.
South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner C.V.D Diengdoh, who was the chief guest, gave away awards to three teachers — Lawrence D. Sangma of Ampati Government Higher Seconday School, Grace Kelly G. Sangma of Ampati Defence U.P. School and Bidyut Ch Hajong of Sapthoka L.P.School.
Gopal Koch of Ampati Defence U.P. School and Chinkey G. Momin of Ampati Government Higher Secondary School received the Best Scoutmaster and the Best Guide Captain awards, respectively.
“Teachers remain dedicated to their duties despite several challenges. The two mjor challenges that a teacher faces are passing on the right values to the youngsters and bringing out the best in a student. So teachers should work hard to make the State government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and quality of education successful,” said Diengdoh.
Poor kids perform
Under-privileged children at SPARK centres on Monday celebrated Teachers’ Day with fervour. SPARK, runs several education centres for children of rag-pickers, domestic helps as well as child workers. More than 300 children from SPARK centres started with a song and dance performance. The programme also acknowledged the role of the parents, most of whom were daily wage earners.
UTM felicitates senior faculty members
Education Research Development Foundation, in association with University of Science and Technology (USTM) and Regional Institute of Science and Technology, felicitated senior faculty members on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
The Amenity Centre of the USTM campus was abuzz with activities on Monday. Vice-chancellor P.G Rao said, “It’s high time for our teachers to take an oath that they are here to rededicate their lives for the cause of education.” Thirteen teachers from various departments were felicitated for their outstanding performance.
In another programme at the USTM Conference Hall, A.C Bhagawati, former VC of Arunachal Pradesh University, and Morris Diengdoh, teacher and social worker from St Paul’s School in Nongpau, were honoured.
