SHILLONG: Peeved at the unhygienic condition of the slaughterhouse at Thangsniang, Jaiaw, the FKJGP central body has asked the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department to deploy officers there to check the quality of meat available at the godown and the method used to slaughter animals before meat is supplied to local markets.
An FKJGP team paid a surprise visit to the slaughterhouse here on Tuesday to get first-hand information on the functioning of the butchery.
Speaking to reporters, FKJGP general secretary Dundee C. Khongsit said, “The slaughterhouse is in a deplorable condition with shortage of water and no proper drainage system. It is a matter of great concern as people are consuming the meat supplied by the unhygienic slaughterhouse.”
“The state government has no proper system of monitoring the animals to ensure that safe meat is available as most of the animals are purchased from outside the State. Animals are usually kept at the godown without proper monitoring,” he added.
The FKJGP added that in an area where livestock is reared, experts are to be present to ensure that proper veterinary inspection is done.
Meanwhile, Donlang Kharumnuid, a butcher, admitted that no proper cleaning of the animals was done at the slaughterhouse due to the government’s apathy towards its development.
