SHILLONG: The Committee on Crimes against Women and Drug Abuse (CCAWDA) organised a public meeting on Friday to sensitise people on the need to curb crime against women and the menace of drug abuse.
Several speakers at the meeting pointed out that a breakdown of familial values and the government’s inability to deal with the present anarchy have lead to the escalating crime in the State.
HSPDP MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew raised concerns over the conviction cases moving in snail’s pace and called for fast delivery of justice.
Agnes Kharshiing, CSWO president, alleged that corruption is rampant in the State and this has led to the slow progress of cases. “There were times when the police have refused to file FIR. We need able and honest police officers who can discharge their duties well and to serve the public,” she said.
“We urge the State government to frame a suitable law to maintain law and order and punish wrongdoers,” KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum said and added that parents should guide their children through the path.
