JOWAI: The Dorbar Shnong of Khanduli village in West Jaintia Hillls has strongly opposed the Karbi people’s demand for a police outpost.
In a meeting on September 6, the Dorbar Shnong decided to oppose the move of the Assam government to set up a police outpost in the village.
“The Dorbar Shnong expresses its deep regret that the Karbis have demanded without any consultation and concern of the Dorbar as we all know that Khanduli falls under West Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya,” it said.
The Dorbar Shnong said the Pnar Karbi Peace Committee Khanduli (Am-Ih Area) was formed on May 24, 2014 in the presence of DCs from both West Jaintia Hills and West Karbi Anglong districts.
“Therefore the memorandum submitted under the name of Karbi Pnar Peace Committee, Khanduli, has misled the Pnar people residing in the border area,” said the Dorbar and urged the DC to look into the matter and prevent any illegal practice by the leaders of the Committee.
It may be mentioned here that the Hamren District Administration organised a Bonhomie Festival at Umpawieng in West Karbi-Anglong District in Assam in which the West Jaintia Hillls Deputy Commissioner and SP Arun Kumar Kembhavi and R Muthi were invited.
Prominent residents of Karbi People on the Assam side had used the name of the Karbi Pnar Peace Committee to submit the memorandum with nine-point demand, including a police outpost at Khanduli and also an SBI branch at Am-ih.
The memorandum was not read at the function before submitting it to the Assam Chief Minister through the West Karbi Anglong DC.
The orginal name of the Committee is ‘Pnar Karbi Peace Committee
(Khanduli-Am-ih area)’ whereas the memorandum submitted was in the name of Karbi Pnar Khanduli Region, which is not the official name of the peace committee.
“We met the WJH DC on Friday and he assured us that no establishment will be allowed from the Assam Government within the jurisdiction of the West Jaintia Hills in Khanduli,” said Secretary of the Khanduli Durbar Shnong Yoshida Nongspung and its Chairman Wanbiang Slong.
