SHILLONG: Founder and chief patron of Madan Hindi Pathshala Secondary School, Madanriting, Dew Kumari Chhetry, who educated children in open space way back in 1965 passed away on September 10 at her residence in Mawshbuit, Shillong, after a brief illness.
She was remembered by the management and staff of the school as a person who took up the challenge to educate young people in an area which had no learning atmosphere as the children from Madanriting and Happy Valley areas had to go to Nongthymmai or Laitumkhrah to get basic education.
In  such a situation, the school which she started with just 6 to 10 students in the open area in a small compound  in 1965  gave hope to the less privileged who were empowered by her constant guidance.
The school currently situated at Madanryting imparts education to as many as   500 students including those from the weaker sections of the society.
Dr Krishna Chauhan, secretary, management committee Madan Hindi Pathshala said that she dedicated her life selflessly for the cause of the education of the poor and the needy.
