Shillong Model UN meet concludes in city
SHILLONG: The two-day Shillong Model United Nations Conference 2016 concluded at St Anthony’s College here on September 25. The conference saw active participation of over 200 students from across the country who came together to discuss various topics of national and international importance like the South China Sea issue, human trafficking, human rights violation and sedition in India.  Additional Chief Secretary H. Marwein was the chief guest at the inaugural session. S. Marak, MPS, Additional SP (Traffic), East Khasi Hills and retired IAS official Toki Blah were also present.
Call for release of abductees 
SHILLONG: The Peace Committee of Garo Hills has appealed to the abductors of Bijoy Kondhu and Rajesh Mahanta from Rongram, West Garo Hills to release them on humanitarian ground. In a statement issued to the media on Tuesday, the Committee also appealed to the militants to come over ground.
NGH medics strike today
TURA: The medical fraternity in North Garo Hills has announced that they are going to cease work on Wednesday in protest against threat and extortion demand made against a doctor of Mendipathar hospital. The lady doctor in charge of Mendipathar primary health centre (PHC) received a phone message from an unlisted number on Sunday demanding that she pay up Rs 5 lakh. Prior to this, the unidentified caller had made several attempts to call both the doctor and her husband which went unanswered. A threat was also issued to the family in the message. The Meghalaya Medical Services Association filed a police complaint over the threat and decided to cease work throughout the district on Wednesday.
2 weigh bridges notified   
SHILLONG: In compliance with the order of the National Green Tribunal dated July 31 last year, the weighbridge of Amsarin near Sohkha Model (village) Jowai-Dawki Road, West Jaintia Hills and the weighbridge of Nongdomprut, West Khasi Hills have been notified to issue weighing certificates to all goods-laden vehicles that pass through the weighbridge for a period of one year and until further orders. This was informed by the Under Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Transport Department.
One held for murder
JOWAI: A person identified as Pal Pohlynjar of Nongtalang village in West Jaintia Hills District was arrested by Dawki Police on Tuesday in connection with the murder of one Deng Pohrmen of the same village. According to Police, Pohrmen was reportedly missing since September 22 and his body was recovered on September 26.
Seminar on cleanliness
Nongpoh: A one-day seminar on cleanliness was held at the Ri Bhoi Presbyterian Synod Vocational Training Centre, Umta Nongthymmai, under the auspices of the Ri Bhoi Presbyterian Synod on Tuesday. The chief guest on the occasion, Programme Officer, State Rural Employment Society, Jubanlang Kharbikhiew, elaborated on the aims and objective of the Swachh Bharat Mission. On the occasion, the Ri Bhoi Presbyterian Synod pledged support to the government in fulfilling the Swachh Bharat Mission. The Ri Bhoi Presbyterian Synod also decided to declare December 2016 as “Weeks of Cleanliness” when churches and other institutions under its jurisdiction will take part in cleaning drives and related activities.
IGNOU permanent building inaugurated
SHILLONG: Governor V Shanmuganathan inaugurated the permanent building of the Indira Gandhi National Open University, (IGNOU) Regional Centre Shillong at NEHU on Tuesday. Present on the occasion were S K Srivastava, Vice Chancellor NEHU,  Ravindra Kumar, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU, R. G. Lyngdoh, Vice Chancellor, MLCU, A. S. Guha, Regional Director, IGNOU, Regional Centre, Shillong among others. On the occasion the Governor lauded the University for providing accessible and quality education to the masses through distance education especially to the economically weaker section.
Youth commits suicide
SHILLONG: A youth committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence at Langkyrding on Monday. Police said that the incident happened around 3 pm. The body of the deceased identified as one Elfrisius Nongrum (24) was sent to Civil Hospital Shillong for post mortem.
