TURA: Armed men went to the home of a grocery store owner at Sangknigre village of South Garo Hills and abducted him at gunpoint on Wednesday evening.
Trader Nirmal Saha had been doing business in Sangknigre for the past many years and had also settled down in that village. On Wednesday evening, approximately 6:30 PM, three armed men carrying pistols barged into his home and ordered him to accompany them. They did not disclose their identity and  despite protests from his wife and family members forcibly took him away towards the forest.
Sangknigre village lies close to West Garo Hills district and is approximately 27 kms from Tura town.
Armed groups like the GNLA and ASAK are known to operate frequently in the Chokpot region and there are instances of petty criminal gangs also targeting civilians.
The ASAK outfit was behind last week’s large scale abduction of nine Assam traders near Silkigre village. They were released on Wednesday morning.
Also, last month, a small time criminal gang murdered a teenage boy and his two friends from Tura after luring them to Kherapara village from where they were abducted.
The gang took away three lakh rupees from the family of the victims promising to release them unharmed even though all three had already been murdered in cold blood.
