Registration mandatory within 60 days of marriage

SHILLONG: The Government on Friday said the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules has been notified and that registrars for Esat and West Khasi Hills, East and West Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi, East and West Garo Hills districts and Sohra and Mairang civil sub-divisions have been appointed.
The Excise, Registration, Taxation and Stamps Department said marriage registrars for the remaining districts and sub-divisions would be notified soon.  As per the rules, those married after October 5, 2015, should submit a memorandum and passport size photographs to respective registrars within 60 days from the date of solemnisation of marriage. The application form can be obtained for Rs 10 from DC offices. The Registrar of Marriage will issue a certificate of registration free of cost to the couple as proof of registration.  If the memorandum is not submitted within 60 days, there be a fine of Rs 100 for each month’s delay after 60 days up to 120 days. The married couple will also be subject to a fine of Rs 50 to a maximum of Rs 1,000 for each month’s delay after 120 days.   However, the Act does not debar the registration of marriages solemnised before October 5, 2015. The Registrar of Marriages of the district or sub-division may be contacted for further details.
