SHILLONG: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is still awaiting approval from the headquarters for repair and overlay of the existing Umsning road.
Sources said NHAI had submitted the Rs 4-crore proposal to its headquarters for repair and overlay of the road.
The repair of the road is on, albeit slowly because of rain, but overlaying will start only after the proposal is cleared.
The dilapidated road dotted with potholes has become a nightmare for residents. Earlier, some NGOs had threatened to block Umsning bypass, which was under construction, demanding fast repair of the road.
Sources said work on the bypass has slowed down owing to monsoon and it will speed up only after the rains. The earth cutting work is almost complete after which construction of the road will start, the sources added.
The implementing agency has set a target of July 2017 to complete the bypass, which is an integral part of the Umiam-Jorabat four-lane road project that is also expected to be complete by next year.
