SHILLONG: The KHNAM state youth wing has extended its support to the Nong Iew Association (NIA) which has called for the eviction of “illegal immigrants who have made Iewduh their dwelling place.”
In a statement issued here on Sunday, the president of KHNAM’s youth wing Thomas Passah expressed surprise over the alleged apathy of the Hima Mylliem and the KHADC which have not taken any action against the illegal settlers despite complaints from the NIA.
Stating that for several years now Iewduh (Bara Bazar) has become a refuge for these illegal immigrants, who are in demand for their cheap labour, Passah said that their presence has led to accumulation of garbage and insecurity in the market area. “The Hima Mylliem has to take responsibility for the accumulation of filth in the area that has polluted the market place. The monthly fee collection by the Hima Mylliem to maintain the area has not been of any use. Multiple inspections have not made any difference,” the KHNAM youth wing statement said.
KHNAM added that the joint inspection to be carried out on October 11 by KHADC CEM PN Syiem should focus on the welfare of the shopkeepers and the traditional market.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had also recently on admitted that the Government had, over the years, failed to provide a ‘healing touch’ to Iewduh while dealing with the challenges faced by the people and the institutions administering the traditional market.
