SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has reiterated that it would continue to oppose railway projects in the Sate if the state government does not come out with a comprehensive mechanism to tackle influx.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum also criticized Shillong MP Vincent Pala for pushing for railway connectivity in the State.
“KHNAM will write to the KHADC urging it not to issue NOC for works related to railway projects,” he said.
“ILP (Inner Line Permit) is the solution to the problem of illegal immigration in the State. The MP should initiate talks with the Centre to introduce ILP in the state and focus on railway projects later,”  Nongrum said adding that instead of taking up the issues faced by the State with the Centre, the MPs are busy pushing for implementation of Central projects in the form of uranium mining and railway in Meghalaya.
He also asserted that the presence of infiltration gate has been ineffective so far and questioned whether the existence of the entry/exit points or the District Task Force will prevent illegal immigration in the State. “Talks on entry/exit points have been going on for four years and it has led the State nowhere,” he said.
