Asks for employment of locals in company

SHILLONG: The Nongtrai unit of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded complete transparency from the Lafarge Umiam Mining Private Limited (LUMPL) and the Dorbar Shnong of Nongtrai.
Addressing media persons on Monday after a meeting, KSU Nongtrai Unit general secretary Trulywell Lyngdoh said, “The LUMPL and the Dorbar Shnong Nongtrai have withheld the documents and copies of the Dorbar Shnong agreement from the residents of Nongtrai.”
Demanding the agreement documents be made public, he said that the limestone company has to show the papers to them so as to resolve the conflict altogether.
Meanwhile, B. Lyngdoh, headman of Nongtrai said, “It is the strict decision of the Dorbar to not give the copies to the residents and if anyone wants to know the contents, they can come to the Dorbar and read the matter.” According to him, there are 276 households at Nongtrai and hundreds of youth have been employed there.
The meeting was called by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, P.S. Dkhar, to resolve issues among the three conflicting parties, the LUMPL, the KSU and Dorbar Shnong.
The KSU claimed that the limestone company has denied jobs to the Nongtrai residents although local youths are well qualified for the job.
