NEIGRIHMS only govt hospital in State to have facilities

SHILLONG: Many people go outside the State for neurological care despite the city offering one of the best and cost-effective facilities, said neurologist Dr Bernard T Lyngdoh.
Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Lyngdoh said better treatment for neurology is available in Meghalaya and this is the reason why many patients are now coming to Shillong. “Neurological care is the cheapest here and there is no compromise on the quality of treatment,” he added.
The neurologist, however, rued that the facilities are not available in government hospitals except NEIGRIHMS, though private hospitals like Nazareth, Super Care and Woodland have them. “Now those who go outside the State for treatment are referred back to Shillong,” he said.
According to Lyngdoh, the number of patients is increasing by the day but there is not enough manpower to cater to all who come from different parts of the North East. Though the infrastructure in almost all private hospitals is impressive, there is no post-radiation therapy in Shillong.
He said the most common disorder found in Meghalaya is TB and spine problems.
Meanwhile, Lyngdoh, who is the organising secretary of Neurological Society of Meghalaya, said the city will host the annual conference of the Association of Neuroscientists of Eastern India on Oct 22-23.
The theme of the two-day event, to be organised by the Neurological Society of Meghalaya along with the Association of Neuroscientists of Eastern India, will be ‘Advancement of Neurosciences in Eastern India, particularly the North East’.
