SHILLONG: With traffic congestion in the city worsening by the day, the Public Works Department (Roads) is now exploring ways to widen roads.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Monday, PWD (Roads) Minister Martin M. Danggo said he would convene a meeting with officials on Wednesday to discuss the scope of road widening.
The number of vehicles on the city roads has more than doubled in the last few years though the roads have remained the same.
“Though time is short but we will try our best to find a solution to this matter,” the minister said.
In addition, the meeting, where representatives of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will also be present, will also discuss other road projects and issues, besides representatives from National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) would also be a part of the meeting.
Negotiations are on with defence authorities to part with some portions of land in Upper Shillong for widening of the road as the project assumes significance due to the traffic flow on the route at a time when the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road is almost complete.
