CCIB yet to get permission for protest rally
SHILLONG: The Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) is yet to seek permission for taking out a procession in the city on October 28.
This was confirmed by East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang as well as Deputy Commissioner P.S Dkhar here on Tuesday.
According to Kharkrang, police make security arrangements depending on the content of the application.
Intensifying its opposition to the Indo-Bangla border fencing inside 150 yards from the zero line, the CCIB had last week announced to organise a protest march to the Main Secretariat from Motphran on October 28 demanding realignment of the border as per the Nehru-Noon Agreement of 1958.
Umlyngka, Upper Shillong roads to be reconstructed
SHILLONG:   The road connectivity in Umlyngka and Upper Shillong is set to receive a boost as the State Government has sanctioned Rs 9.4 crore for roads in the area.
Urban Affairs Minister and Mylliem MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh stated that the roads have been sanctioned under the Special Plan assistance.  The funds will be used for strengthening, construction of 21 internal roads in the area.
Youth Fest
SHILLONG: The State Government project, ‘Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya (SHCDM)’ with the support of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, West Khasi Hills District in collaboration with Aide et Action (AeA) and Nongstoin College, will hold the day-long Nongstoin Youth Festival 2016 themed, ‘Choose Future, Choose Skill’ on October 28, at Madan Iew, New Nongstoin.
To kick start the festival, a ‘Marathon: Skill Run’ will be flagged off at 6:00am from the DC’s Office to Madan Iew.
The event is being organized with an aim to empower youths through SHCDM, which seeks to reach out to thousands of young people and offer them opportunities to enroll themselves for a free training programme with assured job placements.
Demand for ventilation shaft in MUDA building
SHILLONG: The KHNAM has urged the Urban Affairs Department to re-open the ventilation shaft at the MUDA building in Khyndailad.
A delegation of KHNAM leaders led by its state youth wing president Thomas Passah on Monday apprised Urban Affairs Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh of the closure of the ventilation shaft in the MUDA building.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Passah said the MUDA building was constructed with a large ventilation shaft with the objective of draining out hazardous gases emitted by vehicles.
Passah pointed out that the ventilation shaft was closed down after construction of two shops — Baskin & Robins and Subway.
He also enumerated the importance of ventilation system in buildings and parking lots in the light of the National Building Code of India specifications.The Minister assured to look into the matter.

Crinoline swiming pool to be handed over to MSA
SHILLONG: The Crinoline swimming pool will be formally handed over to the Meghalaya Swimming Association (MSA), informed MSA general secretary Ian Khongmen here on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after a delegation of MSA members met Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma, Khongmen said, “No date has been fixed and the handover will take time.” When asked about the floating of the Expression of Interest (EoI) by Meghalaya State Sports Council to “commercialise the pool”, Khongmen said, “Now that the pool is being handed over to the association, the question of EoI does not arise.” He informed that a free-of-cost coaching camp for budding swimmers will be conducted after the handover where qualified coaches from outside the state will train swimming enthusiasts.
PWD neglects Bajengdoba bridges
SHILLONG: The GSU’s Mendal Regional Unit has slammed the PWD over its failure to repair the damaged wooden bridges under Bajengdoba PWD road.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the GSU regional unit general secretary, Samar R. Marak, said there are several bridges on the route from Bajengdoba to Kimdegre and A’chotchonggre which need immediate repair but the PWD has failed to do the needful.
“One of the bridges at Bekbekgre, the Rajing bridge, was closed down by the department in August 2016 instead of carrying out repair work,” he said, adding that people are facing a lot of difficulties due to the closure of the bridge.
None from NGH selected for MSRLS written exam
SHILLONG: Applicants from Resubelpara seeking jobs in various posts under the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) have claimed that none of the applicants from North Garo Hills have been selected for the written examination.
According to the aggrieved job aspirants, the applications were submitted in September at the block office in Resubelpara. The applicants, who accused the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society of being unfair, wanted to know on what basis their names were rejected. The aggrieved candidates met the BDO on Monday who informed that the applications have been forwarded to the MSRLS office in Shillong.
Cattle seized
MAJHESORA: BSF troops deployed at Majhesora, South West Khasi Hills, apprehended one Bangladeshi cattle smuggler with nine cattle. The Bangladeshi, identified as one Md Mansoor, a resident of Majhesora village, Sunamganj district, Bangladesh, was exfiltrating cattle from the Indian border to Bangladesh. The BSF is now looking for his Indian associates.
On the same night, the BSF seized a total of 46 cattle in the areas of Beldova, Kalaichar and Mahadev in South West Garo Hills, Hawitilla in West Jaintia Hills and Nayabazar in East Khasi Hills, while being smuggled into Bangladesh.  Cattle smugglers are adopting a new method in the border areas under whch Bangladesh cattle smugglers bring cattle for grazing near the border and their Indian counterparts do the same. The cattle are then easily smuggled out.
