SHILLONG: With the opposition to commercialization of Crinoline swimming pool continuing, the former deputy chief minister in charge Sports and Youth Affairs Bindo Lanong on Saturday asked the government to make clear the status of sanctioned scheme of making it a national standard swimming pool. The plan made in 2012 was for the extension of the Crinoline swimming pool and to upgrade it to a 50 metre pool with four additional lanes taking the number of lanes to eight. “The scheme and estimate was prepared, survey carried out and sanction made during my tenure, but the project has been lying for long without implementation”, Lanong told reporter after the general council meeting of UDP Shillong city on Saturday. The Rs 1.70 crore project approved by the government was aimed at giving a face-lift to the swimming pool to have national level standard. UDP leader Allantly F Dkhar, while opposing the commercialization of the swimming pool as raised by Meghalaya Swimming Association (MSA) said the commercialization will not further the cause of water sports activities.
