SHILLONG: The UDP on Saturday alleged that the State government is protecting tainted leaders in the party.
Referring to former JHADC chief Madonbai Rymbai and cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, UDP leader Bindo Lanong said the manner in which the government is protecting these leaders “is alarming”. He was speaking to reporters after the general council meeting of UDP Shillong City here on Saturday.
While Rymbai faces allegations of withdrawing over Rs 1.18 crore in the name of beneficiaries who had not availed themselves of any benefits, the name of Lyngdoh was mentioned by the CBI probing the education scam. Lanong wanted to know whether the government was still turning a blind eye to the case involving the former JHADC CEM, who has allegedly embezzled crores of rupees.
“We also discussed the education scam. The meeting expressed serious displeasure over the slow pace of disposing of the pending case affecting the victimised school teachers,” Lanong said.
Earlier, ahead of the district council elections in 2014 and the Lok Sabha polls, the UDP had prepared a ‘charge-sheet’ exposing various shortcomings of the Congress-led MUA-II government highlighting the JHADC and the education scams, among others.
The copies of the ‘charge-sheet’ were also sent to the President and the Prime Minister. Commenting on the matter, UDP Shillong city general secretary Allantry F. Dkhar said there was no response from the Centre to the party’s positive effort to expose the misdeeds of the government.
The UDP’s report sent to Delhi said the Congress government led by Mukul Sangma stands “accused, blacklisted, charge-sheeted, and discredited” (ABCD) and has lost the moral and legal right to continue in office”.
