SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress led by President Richard Marak protested at Congress Bhavan in the city on Thursday against the unlawful detention and denial of permission to party vice president Rahul Gandhi for visiting the bereaved family members of ex-serviceman Subedar R.K Grewal who committed suicide over ‘One Rank One Pension’.
Those who demonstrated included MPCC working president James S. Lyngdoh, the general secretaries, president of Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress Joplin Shylla with her members, and Seva Dal members, leaders of the district and the block Congress Committees, besides a large number of Congress party workers.
The demonstrators condemned the detention of Gandhi and other AICC leaders along with the family members of the ex-army man.”India is going through an undeclared emergency,” the MPYC said on Thursday.  The Youth Congress chief of the state also wanted to know what was wrong in offering condolence to a soldier’s grieving family. “We demand that the Home Minister should remove the Police Commissioner and if he is powerless to do so, he should resign immediately,” the statement said.
According to the Youth Congress, Narendra Modi as promised in the BJP manifesto in 2014 should fulfil the promise of OROP to the army. “The army veterans are still demanding proper implementation of OROP. He should fulfil his promise or quit,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the meeting of the West Garo Hills District Congress Committee and Tura City Congress Committee held in Tura on Thursday condemned the delay in implementation of OROP and detention of Rahul Gandhi.
