NGOs want load shedding timing change
Several NGOs from South Garo Hills including the GSU, FKJGP and BCF have urged the MeECL to change the current load shedding schedule for the region. Stating that students studying for their examinations have been facing problems due to the current load shedding timing, they proposed that the same should be done during the day time, without affecting the students.“Due to load shedding during the night, the students are facing problems in preparing for their exams. The concerned department must change the load shedding timing and do it during the day for the sake of the students,” the NGOs said.
Man found dead in Jowai residence
A man identified as Wan Emdor Suchiang was found dead inside a toilet in his residence at Mookyrdup, Jowai on Wednesday morning. According to police, the man was in the toilet since Monday night with the toilet door locked from the inside. The door was broke open only on Tuesday morning on the arrival of the police. The man is suspected to be a drug addict and died due to over-dose. Police recovered a syringe in his hand and two tablets. The family members have also requested for exemption from post-mortem examination.
National Day for Disaster Reduction
As part of the observance of the National Day for Disaster Reduction (NDDR), a prize distribution function with the theme ‘Disaster reduction and preparedness begins at home’ was organised by the District Disaster Management Authority, (DDMA),West Khasi Hills on November 9 at the TRYSEM Hall, Nongstoin. The programme was attended by headmen, secretaries , principals, teachers, students,NSS volunteers, National Cadet Corps (NCC) of different schools and colleges of Nongstoin .P.D Sangma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Nongstoin inaugurated the programme. He also emphasised on the need to have a safe environment for schools and colleges and stated that it is the institutions’ priority to ensure the safety of teachers and students.
Preserving language stressedat A’chik meet
There is a need to promote and preserve A’chik by teaching the next generation how to speak the language both at home and outside, said one of the speakers at the annual general conference of A’chik Literature Society (ALS) that was held recently at Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Tura.Uttam K Sangma, who was the chief guest at the programme, said children must speak in the language at home. Citing the examples of Latin and Sanskrit, which became dead languages as common people stopped speaking these, Sangma urged the gathering to promote Garo language. Talking about the already vanishing language, Sangma said he was happy to see the A’chik Nokpante (bachelors’ dormitory) at the Hornbill festival last year but was shocked to find out that the A’chiks wearing traditional dress and ornaments could not speak the language. Meanwhile, a book titled ‘A’”chikrangna Missionaryrangni Kamrang’ by Awensing S. Rongmuthu was also released by Prof Milton S Sangma and PhD students were felicitated at the event.
3 dead in separate accidents
Three persons died in two separate road accidents in Ri Bhoi district in a span of two days.On November 6, around 4.30 pm, one Hyundai Eon car (AS-01B-8560) driven by Mukit Rahman dashed against one truck (AS-01GC-4451) at 19th Mile, Byrnihat. In the accident, the driver sustained grievous injuries and was removed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Necessary formalities were observed.In another incident, one truck (NL-01G-8151) capsized at Sumer in Ri Bhoi on November 4. In the accident, two persons, Dulon Khongkai, 21, and Aiban Maiong, 22, died on the spot.
Youths receive training under NYKS
The State Level 15-Day Induction Training for National Youth Volunteers of Meghalaya organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) East Khasi Hills is underway with participation from youths from across the State. The event which began from November 7 will conclude on November 21. Salam S. Singh District, Youth Coordinator (DYC), NYK, said that youth volunteers are given exposure to event management, trips across the country and abroad, training in skill development, to facilitate social interaction, disaster management training, leadership and public speaking training etc. He informed that on November 17, participants will be involved in voters enrolment drive. There are 3 lakh youths involved in NYKS in the country.
Shillong College hosts national workshop
A two-day national workshop on ‘Managing Yourself and Leading Others’ organised by the Department of Management, was inaugurated here in the city on Wednesday.Speaking at the inaugural function, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma said that workshops like this are important especially for the youth who are the future leaders of tomorrow even as she added that the youth should be motivated to participate in such programmes rather than just stay confined to the purview of the syllabi.
Concern over double tax at Byrni check gate
The Byrnihat Border Area Stockist Union (BBASU) on Tuesday met the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi, CP Gotmare and expressed their concern on the double tax that they now have to pay. The Union stated that the new Integrated Check Gate located at 13th Mile Byrnihat is still collecting taxes on goods and mineral resources which were already paid for at the former Umling Integrated Check Gate. The BBASU led by its adviser, Albertus Lapang and president Jeslin Syngkli along with union members submitted a memorandum to the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner seeking his intervention on the matter with the concerned higher authorities. After a meeting, DC Albertus Lapang and Jeslin Syngkli informed media persons that the presence of integrated check gate comprising of sales tax, DMR and weigh bridge at 13th Mile Byrnihat has caused unnecessary inconvenience to daily commuters.
Guv on PMSMA
Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan has called upon expectant mothers in Garo Hills and the entire state to take full advantage of the free health care facilities being provided by the government under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan. The governor who arrived in Tura on Wednesday morning interacted with as many as 134 pregnant mothers at the Child and Maternity hospital in Tura. The governor informed that under the PMSMA scheme health care facilities for expectant mothers is completely free and urged them to make full use of the services which has immense benefits for both mother and child. He mentioned that under PMSMA pregnant mothers are given the free health check up.
