SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) Youth Wing in a petition to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who is also the in charge Finance, demanded the implementation of “equal pay for equal work”.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, KHNAM Youth Wing president Thomas Passah said, “We urge the CM to implement equal work for equal pay as the salary should be uniform for both casual appointees and regular government servants.”
In the petition to the CM, the youth wing of the regional party stated, “The Supreme Court has held that the principle of equal pay for equal work has to be made applicable to those engaged as daily wagers, casual and contractual employees who perform the same duties as the regulars. The SC has also termed the denial of equal pay for equal work as exploitation.”
Stating that the pay disparity between temporary and regular employees has been a setback for many families of the state, Passah said that there are qualified people who are working as casual employees for lesser wages.
Urging the CM to intervene for proper implementation of the Supreme Court verdict of “Equal Pay for Equal Work” in the state, he said that all possible measures will be taken by the organization to ensure that it is followed.
“We will file an RTI to know whether the “Equal Pay for Equal Work” has been implemented in the state or not,” he added.
Meanwhile, KHNAM has sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister in charge Food Civil Supply & Consumer Affairs, R.C. Laloo expressing concern over the shortfall of supply of kerosene through PDS.
“We were informed that the Central Government is proposing to implement the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) LPG connection scheme to the BPL families,” Passah said.
Stating that such a move is not feasible he argued that even in urban areas, people are having a hard time with the LPG connection and the delivery system.
He urged the government to provide the necessary supply of kerosene to the BPL families.
