SHILLONG: The headman of a village in Ri Bhoi was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a woman whose body was found at Mawiongrim in Ryndangbriew.
Donbor Rymbai (41), the headman of Liarkhla village, is the prime accused in the murder of the woman, identified as 32-year-old Rosemary Mawlong of Sumer in Ri Bhoi, said East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang.
The investigation has been jointly conducted by East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi district police. Police said the accused has admitted to his crime.
Rymbai and Mawlong, who was a mother of three, were in a relationship for the past two years. Rymbai saw her with someone at Sohpetbneng on Sunday night and in a fit of rage strangulated her, police sources said. Later, he took the body to Ryndangbriew and threw it from the vehicle. Police found the body lying along the roadside at Mawiongrim.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing who is following up the case told reporters that Mawlong had three children from her previous husband who passed away three years ago. The woman’s mother did not like her meeting Rymbai, who is married, and so the woman wanted to end the relationship.
On Sunday, Rymbai visited Mawlong’s house two to three times while she was in Shillong for some work. The next morning, a relative found Mawlong’s shawl near the house and immediately approached police. The family later identified the body.
The accused has reportedly committed the crime alone and has been booked under Section 302.
Besides the confession of the accused, police would examine all angles before filing charge sheet.
