TURA: An under-trial prisoner escaped when he was taken from the transit van to the court lock-up on Friday morning. The security team had escorted 15 under-trial prisoners from Tura district jail to the court, which is at a distance of approximately 7km. One of them, identified as Jimson M Marak (27), a resident of Dalu, managed to flee despite the presence of security personnel. His disappearance came to the fore only a head count took place after the UTPs were placed inside the court lock-up. He was in prison in connection with a murder case. The Prosecution Inspector of the court has filed an FIR and the district police have ordered a probe by the additional superintendent of police.
This is not the first instance of a prisoner escaping here and the two district jails in Tura and Williamnagar, gave earned notoriety for such cases.
The last hardcore militant to escape from Tura district jail was GNLA commander Kennedy T Sangma alias Habel who made his way to freedom after scaling the walls using a bed sheet during the night.
