SHILLONG: With the filing of nomination starting on Monday, electioneering for the KHADC and the JHADC council seats is set to gain momentum.
The model code of conduct for the December 13 by-poll will take effect from the same day, as informed earlier by DCA Minister Prestone Tynsong.
Altogether 232 polling stations will be installed for by-polls to the six KHADC seats and 18 for one JHADC seat.
The by-poll was necessitated after seven MLAs resigned from the post of MDC in the two District Councils last year following the passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015, which seeks to end holding of dual posts by the MLAs.
1,46,544 and 6,739 voters in the KHADC and the JHADC, respectively, will decide the fate of the seven candidates.
The six vacant constituencies under the KHADC include Nongkrem, Laban-Mawprem, Nongspung-Sohiong, Mairang-Nongkhlaw, Pariong-Mawthadraishan and Rambrai-Jyrngam constituencies. The single vacant seat in the JHADC is War-East constituency.
Following Governor V. Shanmuganathan’s nod to the by-election schedule as fixed by the State government, the publication of draft electoral rolls has been fixed for October 10 and the election will be held on December 13. Counting is on December 16.
