SHILLONG: The enrolment of names under the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for issuing ‘Aadhaar’ in West Jaintia Hills is on hold for two months now.
West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Arun Kumar Kembhavi said that the enrolment process was stopped during Durga puja festival due to payment issues with the vendor.
It is learnt that the State Government has cancelled the agreement with the previous vendor which was conducting the enrollment in West Jaintia Hills and fresh tenders are being invited to appoint a new vendor for the district.
According to Kembhavi, around 22 per cent of the population in the district has already been enrolled for Aadhaar. “There has been no opposition to the enrollment,” he said.
“After the initial hiccup, the response now is very good. Moreover, a lot of campaigns about Aadhaar have been conducted in the district,” he said.  It may be mentioned that the Centre has set December 2017 deadline for 100 per cent enrolment in the country.
