SHILLONG: A conglomeration of 13 NGOs wants the State government to expedite the process of setting up entry and exit points in the State to check influx and illegal immigration.
KSU president Daniel Khyriem told The Shillong Times on Wednesday that they would not allow railways in the State until the proposed entry and exit points are set up.
“After the points are set up, we will review its functioning and only then we will take a decision,” he said.
As many as 17 entry and exit points are to be made operational in the first phase and currently a social impact assessment is being conducted at many sites where land has to be acquired by the State government for setting up the points.
The NGOs will review the matter and then meet the government again for expediting the process of setting up the entry and exit gates.
The districts where the entry and exit points will be set up are Ri Bhoi, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills, North Garo Hills, West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills.
The pro-ILP groups have inspected the proposed location for setting up facilitation centres for entry and exit points in Ri Bhoi district as part of the comprehensive mechanism to tackle influx and illegal immigrants.
