TURA: A crucial resolution seeking creation of a separate Garoland state, moved by the ruling alliance during the winter session of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, was passed unanimously after 25 MDCs from both ruling and opposition benches supported it in a voice vote on Tuesday.
Deputy CEM Augustine R. Marak of the Garo National Council highlighted the long political battle over separate statehood during the debate. He was supported by party colleague and executive member Wenison Ch Marak.
Members cutting across party lines spoke in favour of separate Garoland. Independent Tura MDC Rupert Sangma recalled the struggle of Augustine Marak during his student days and his arrest and subsequent imprisonment for the cause.
Non-tribal MDC Esmatur Mominen of Shyamnagar constituency suggested an administrative system on the lines of Bodoland Territorial Council.
During the statehood debate, Tura MDC Rupert Sangma wanted to know the status of the Garo community living in the Khasi Hills region but his query was turned down by Chairman of the house Boston Marak on the grounds that the discussion was related solely on endorsement of a separate state or otherwise.
When the chairman called for a voice vote in favour of the resolution, the 25 MDCs passed the resolution unanimously.
Boston Marak said the resolution would be sent to the State Government and the Governor for approval.
Meanwhile, rich tributes were paid to late Purno Agitok Sangma by Rochonpara MDC Dipul R Marak for the veteran leader’s long-time support to the creation of smaller states for better governance.
