No permission from PWD for ongoing road project in GH
TURA: There appears to be some truth in the alleged nexus between unscrupulous contractors and government officials with regard to the contentious road project at Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills, with the Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads) of Barengapara Division revealing that no permission was given for the same from their end. Earlier, villagers of Kazipara and Kalupara had complaint to the BADO Director in Shillong apprising him about destruction to their well maintained road by three local contractors to make way for the ongoing project. In a rejoinder issued here on Wednesday, the official informed that the 1.052 km road from Majherchar to BSF check post via Kajipara-Kulupara is an unmetalled existing PWD road constructed in 1999 and under the maintenance of PWD Roads, Mahendraganj Subdivision. As per the official, a decision had been taken to repair the road and extend its width as complaints with regard to its dilapidated condition had been received from the public earlier. However, work on the proposed repair was yet to be initiated. Following the revelation in the media of the ongoing road construction, the official said the matter would be taken up with BADO officials as no permission was given by them.

Lapang lays foundation stone for motorable road
SHILLONG: Nongpoh legislator and Chief Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya, DD Lapang laid a foundation stone for construction of motorable blacktopping road at Marmain village on November 30. This road is the pilot project which was sanctioned under Meghalaya Livelihood Access to Market Programme (MLAMP) Scheme of the Meghalaya Basin Development Agency under Umling C&RD Block at an amount of Rs. 30 Lakhs for 1 km from Marmain towards Pisamhuru village. Later in the day, Lapang inaugurated the renovated school building of Jowe Presbyterian School Lower Primary School. The school building was damaged during a cyclone was renovated under Relief fund from Umling C&RD Block at a sanctioned amount of Rs.1.50 lakh.

Security forces hold civic action prog in Chokpot
TURA: Security forces engaged in anti-insurgency operations took time off on Friday to address the needs of the civilian population by organising a civic action programme at Mitapgre village of Chokpot, a region long infamous for militant related incidents. The 120 battalion of the CRPF, stationed at Tura jointly organised the programme with South Garo Hills district police at the remote village which has long remained a neglected area with limited facilities available. A free medical camp was conducted and medicines were provided to the patients. Later, sports items were distributed alongside sweetmeats and awards to the participants and winners of the matches. They also informed that more of such programmes would be conducted  to build  healthy police-public relationship.

RKM distribute garments
SHILLONG: Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, Kolkata, through its Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama at Cherrapunjee (Sohra) organised an adult garment distribution programme on December 2 to the poor and needy adults of Nongkynrih  Region under Khyrim Syiemship, EKH. The distribution was done in collaboration with ITC Limited as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme of the latter.  Donevan Kharwanlang, MDC, who attended as as the chief guest inaugurated the function by handing over garments to a senior citizens.  Garments worth around Rs.31,74,920 were distributed among a total of 629 residents.

Dance competition
SHILLONG: In aid of St Paul Higher Secondary School, Marbisu, the past pupils of the school will organise an open to all dance competition titled ‘Live wire for peace’ on December 31. ”Juliana Kurbah who participated in the dance show, ‘Super mom’ will be present during the event. There will be performances from Serenity Choir, Carmel Attard Symphonic Choir,” Kester Warjri, alumnus told reporters during a press conference on Friday. He added that interested candidates can download the form from their facebook page, ‘livewire for peace, following the registration, contestants will be called for auditions from which 10 contestants will be shortlisted for solo performances and 10 groups for group acts.  “The prize money will be Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 15,000 for first, second and third prize for group winners and in the individual category, the winners will get Rs  30,000, Rs15,000 and Rs 10,000 for first, second and third prizes,” Sun said. Auditions will be held on December 16, 17, 26 and 27. The venue will be at Mini Stadium, Marbisu. The performances will start at 5 pm.

Loans for 5 differently-abled persons
AMPATI: Five differently-abled persons from South West Garo Hills got loans under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) at a function organised by the district social welfare office on the occasion of International Day for Persons with Disabilities on Saturday. The beneficiaries of the MUDRA scheme have completed skill development training in various trades like knitting, tailoring and cane and bamboo crafts. The loans will help them start small-scale units. Addressing the gathering at the function — which was organised in collaboration with the district administration, Sarva Shiksha Yojana and Bethany Society at Ampati MFC on Friday — Salmanpara legislator W.D Sangma said the celebration brings all differently-abled persons on a par with other citizens “ensuring equal delivery of services and facilities to them”.

Blood donation camp at Umroi
Nongpoh: The Confederation of Ri Bhoi People , Umden Circle in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Service and Meghalaya Aids Control Society, Shillong on Friday conducted a  blood donation camp at Umroi Airport. An awareness programme was also organised at the Civil Engineering Office of Umroi Airport. As many as 50 blood donors attended the camp.
