SHILLONG: The District Medical & Health Officer, East Khasi Hills, is concerned over the low participation of males in vasectomy which is considered a permanent method of birth control and family planning.
Speaking to media persons here on Friday on the occasion of Vasectomy Fortnight, Dr JB Ranee, MCH Officer said that that altogether 15 males has had vasectomy in East Khasi Hills District in 2015 while 10 males have come forward for the surgery till August this year.
She stated that Vasectomy Fortnight is observed in order to revitalize the participation of males in the surgery even as she added that the Central Government has directed all the states to observe it to create awareness on the subject.
She said that Civil Hospital, NEIGRIHMS and Military Hospital now has the No Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) available where knife, blade and stitching is not involved while performing vasectomy.
The NSV is just a 10 minute simple surgery and it is painless, Dr T Lyngdoh, Senior Surgeon, Shillong Civil Hospital said.
According to Lyngdoh, patients who come forward for NSV is also being given a compensation of Rs 1100 and the motivator is also paid a compensation of Rs 200.
He also said that males are not coming forward for NSV due to misconceptions and informed that there is no affect of NSV on sexual activity.
Meanwhile, the Vasectomy Fortnight was observed in two parts mobilization from November 21-28 and service delivery from November 28 till December 4 and the Central Government has now directed the department to extend it by one more week.
