SHILLONG: The mini-composting plant at Marten is complete and will soon be operational.
Sources said necessary tests are being conducted in the laboratory of the Agriculture Department. If the reports are positive, the headman and other authorities will be called for inspection of the site before inauguration, the sources added.
So far, 35 metric tonnes of bio-degradable waste has gone into the mini composting plant.
Meanwhile, distribution of colour-coded dustbins, a project funded by the Asian Development Bank, has been stopped in the non-municipal areas owing to delays on the part of the supplier.
Reacting to a query about distribution of dustbins in the Cantonment areas, sources said the matter has been discussed with the Shillong Cantonment Board, which is willing to purchase dustbins at their own expense.
But there are complaints that the Shillong Municipal Board is not following up on its directive to shopkeepers to buy dustbins. “After issuing notices to shops, the Municipal Board is not following it up and hence shopkeepers are not following the directive,” sources said.
