NONGSTOIN: A remote hamlet under Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency in West Khasi Hills does not figure in the electoral rolls. The constituency goes to polls on December 13.
With a vote bank of more than 60 and a total population of more than 90, Umsumbah village has been left out of the by-poll battle. Headman Kliarshon Marthong said, “We are baffled as we still are uncertain as to which constituency we are included in or excluded from.”
Marthong, who was upset over the omission, said the villagers had voted in the last three elections but “this time we found that our village is not in the electoral rolls”.
The headman has urged the higher authority to solve the matter immediately and include the villagers in the voters’ list for Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency or defer the date of election.
When asked, Extra Assistant Commissioner S. Warjri said he did not know as the KHADC by-poll in Rambrai was under the charge of B. Rani.
When contacted, Rani said she was aware of the case of Umsumbah but as she took charge recently, she did not know about the exclusion of Umsumbah from the electoral roll.
