SHILLONG: Lieutenant General Shokin Chauhan took over as the 19th Director General of Assam Rifles on December 12.
Lieutenant General Chauhan is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College and the prestigious National Defence College. He was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles in December 1979.
The General Officer has a vast combat experience starting from his initial days of serving as a ski trooper on the Siachen Glacier in May 1984 as part of OP Meghdoot. Thereafter, as a sub unit Commander, he was actively involved in counter insurgency operations both in Manipur and Jammu & Kashmir.
He also held various prestigious instructional and staff appointments during his career ranging from instructor National Defence Academy, Brigade Major of a Brigade and General Staff Officer-1 in Corps, Senior Instructor DSSC, Defence Attach’e Nepal, Director ALC, DDG PP Strat and ADG PI at IHQ of MoD (Army).
As a Battalion Commander, the General Officer had the opportunity of commanding his Battalion in Op Vijay and Op Rakshak.
Chauhan is a highly decorated officer who has been awarded the Yudh Seva Medal, the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished services.
