TURA: Tura MP Conrad K Sangma led a delegation of MDCs from the GHADC to meet Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley at Parliament on Wednesday to brief him about the functioning of the oldest autonomous body and the financial problems inherited due to a huge drop in revenue collection following the NGT ban.
The delegation comprised of former Rajya Sabha MP Thomas A Sangma, Chairman of GHADC Boston Ch Marak, executive members of GHADC Kurosh M Marak (Taxation) and Wenison Ch Marak (Revenue).
According to the Tura MP, the delegation briefed the Finance Minister about the utilisation of the money worth a Rs 100 crore that was granted to the GHADC as a onetime special assistance.
Jaitley was also briefed on the ongoing administrative and financial reforms taking place with the help of the Centre for Good Governance (CGG), Hyderabad and the need for more financial assistance in the future to strengthen the GHADC.
“We also briefed the finance minister about the current impact of demonetisation in Meghalaya and the north east as a whole and urged the minister for more intervention especially keeping in mind the festive season of Christmas as majority of the population is Christian,” said Sangma.
“The response of the Union minister was positive and he has assured us of all possible help and support,” added the Tura MP.
The Garo Hills delegation also called on Jitendra Singh, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and holding charge of the DoNER ministry and highlighted to him the same problems being faced by the people of the north east during the festive season of Christmas.
